Every crochet blog has an origin story. My story begins with an opossum.
Not just any opossum, but Queefus Maximus. Ruler of the backyard, uninvited guest of the household, and the only wild animal I’ve ever seen use a doggy door like he paid rent.
At first, I noticed the dog food disappearing faster than usual. The water bowl looked suspiciously low every morning. I assumed my dog was just extra hungry, until one night I noticed a ball of fur. If you’ve ever lived with a double coated dog, balls of fur are a regular part of the decor. But this ball of fur, was WALKING!
That’s when we met Queefus Maximus.
He’d stroll in like this was part of his nightly routine. Eat the dog food. Drink the water. Pause briefly, as if to reflect on his life choices. Then he’d turn around and leave. No chaos. No fear. Just audacity.
Opossums are weirdly lovable. Their faces look permanently shocked, like they just realized they forgot something important but can’t remember what. They’re misunderstood. They’re awkward. They survive entirely on vibes. And honestly, same.
So, this happened night after night. Between refilling the dog bowl and watching Queefus waddle away, I realized he had become part of my household lore. A mascot. A tiny legend. As a crochet artist, I knew I needed to add a crochet opossum into my collection.
So here’s to Queefus Maximus.
May his dog food feasts be plentiful.
May his tail remain bald.
And may his legacy live on with this roundup of 8 free opossum crochet patterns.
